The Black Plume

Our motto claims this one desire,
"In Word & Deed, with Plume & Seed!"
Around that providence we lead
The spirit of the age still higher.

With each a song, they all aspire
To far advance sustaining speed
That motto etched with one desire:
"In Word & Deed, with Plume & Seed!"

Yet something calms this passion's fire;
It strangles varied fruits, a weed
Where wisdom lost, debased in creed,
Uproots the children of the lyre –
Whose motto sings their sole desire
In Word & Deed, with Plume & Seed!

This poem is opaque to me. I grant that it's a good thing to express thoughts compactly. But should a poem's every thought be so compressed?

The Needs For Welfare

This may be that I didn't include the full context here, like I did on Fur Affinity. The fact that the poem remains unclear to you does show its own faults in the composition, however. The inspiration was a famous quote by Cicero, as well as my own meditations on the nature between wealth and welfare. I should compose another journal fleshing out these topics more thoroughly.
